A short story about a man who was resolved to miss the boat of technological conformity.

Deceiving perceptions

The man loathed what most of the modern world called progress. He knew there would come a time when he would have to choose between getting on the metaphorical boat of technological transition or not.

He was resolved to miss it entirely and wondered how life would be afterward.

The humanity within him needed social interaction and the feeling of belonging, yet it also needed to be free of the imposing will of artificial intelligence. The name of the amorphous technological persona was telling, as it embodied the superficial and false aspects of modern mankind.

Thoughts of the times before television and electricity filled his mind with peace. He realized times weren’t perfect before these technological inventions, yet he was convinced they were better.

Likely, the people of the past longed for the type of material wealth and convenience of the modern world, yet if somehow they could attain it, he questioned whether they would have been horrified at what they lost.

Even the relative tranquility and respite found before the internet was popularized was precious in the man’s mind. Even the peace found before the smartphone…
